Adventure in Asia: Some of the Best Trekking in the Continent
Last Updated on July 12, 2020
Adventure in Asia: Traveling and visiting the main tourist attractions and landscapes is very good, but perhaps it is necessary to go into the nature of the country, to discover its geography really and, often, its culture. The best way to make an active vacation is doing trekking, hiking, with a little adventure.
There are specific travel books for this, in addition to travel agencies or guides in the countries themselves, which offer all kinds of excursions. Although, I think doing it on your own is always more exciting (when conditions allow it).
In Asia, there are a lot of possible excursions. From the Himalayas to the jungles of Thailand, through the volcanoes of Indonesia, there are thousands of possibilities for day trips or a month, harder and smoother. In this post, I will talk about what I like the most when I travel, explore, walk, and get into nature in its purest state.
Here You Have 5 of the Best Excursions in Asia
The Circuit of the Annapurnas, Nepal
The country of the Himalayas. 8 of the highest mountains in the world are in this country. In Nepal, there are endless possibilities for excursions and other adventure activities. It is, surely, the most popular country for trekking.
Among the most famous is the 3-week Annapurna Circuit, which reaches 5416 m. of height, or the visit to Everest Base Camp. Some of these treks are quite popular and go through small Nepalese villages where there are hostiles hostels in which to spend the night.
There are excursions for all tastes and physical condition. It is possible to do them independently, as well as hire guides and porters in Kathmandu or Pokhara.
The State of Ladakh, India
In North India, in the states of Uttar Pradesh and Himachal Pradesh, there are several possibilities for trekking, but for me, the geographically most impressive state is Ladakh. Ladakh is on the border with Tibet, and they call it Little Tibet because of the culture of its people and the geography of the land.
The largest population, Leh, is located at 3,600 meters high, and, by land, you can only reach it by going through a road at 5,100 meters high, which only opens for a few months a year. From Leh, you can start and/or organize many excursions throughout the area, although it is not as prepared as in some treks of Nepal.
The volcano Rinjani on the Island of Lombok, Indonesia
In more than 17 thousand islands that form Indonesia, there are many possibilities of adventure. Excursions through the jungle in search of Orangutans ( Sumatra Island ), night treks to climb volcanoes, and watch the sunrise from above (Lombok Island), multi-day trails between tribal villages (Island of Papua), etc.
One of the most recommendable is the trekking to Rinjani volcano of 3800 m, an excursion from 2 to 4 days, which can include the visit to the crater to see the enormous lake and the hard climb to the volcano peak.
The Tee Ler Su waterfall in Umphang, Thailand
Many travelers visit Thailand’s national parks to learn about its rich flora and fauna or to visit one of the many tribal groups that inhabit the north. It is not recommended to visit the Padaung, known as women with a giraffe neck since the UN has denounced on more than one occasion the tourist exploitation suffered by travel agencies.
One of the best treks we did in Thailand, Carles and I, was at the Umphang Wildlife Sanctuary, a protected natural reserve and inhabited by several tribes, on the border with Burma.
We went on our own, although we lost several times hehe, so it is advisable to hire a guide, and spent the night in a village Karen (one of the tribes), after having visited the Tee Ler its Waterfall, the largest waterfall in the country. Highly recommended! Discover more about the natural parks of Thailand.
The Tiger Leaping Gorge in Yunnan, China
In all the provinces of China, there are incredible excursions or famous mountains to visit. In most of the mountains, you must pay entrance and sometimes they are really full of people. When I visited Hua ShanMountain, near Xi’an, there were even policemen on the roads directing the traffic of people, crazy. Although the tour was very worth it.
However, the most famous province for trekking (with permission from Tibet, which is quite complicated to do anything because of the Chinese government’s control) in Yunnan. Yunnan is in the south of China, bordering Burma, Laos, and Vietnam, and offers breathtaking landscapes.
One of the most famous excursions in The Tiger Leaping Gorge ( Tiger Leaping Gorge)), from 2 to 4 days. It is an excursion through the incredible valley of the Yangtze River, with cliffs of 2000 meters high that descend from peaks with an altitude of 5000 meters above sea level.
